Mauritius is now the proud home of the Guinness World Records title holder for the Largest scrambled eggs ever cooked.
And trust us it is large and very scrambled with the final weight recorded at 2,466 kg (5,436 lb 9.58 oz).
After months of preparation the record was broken at Bagatelle Mall in Mauritius on Saturday 27 October to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Inicia Ltée, the country’s largest egg production and distribution company.
Bosses wanted to attempt the record as part of an event which reflected the organisation’s philosophy of providing food for people in need.
An enormous frying pan was built for the attempt: there’s no way a regular pan would cope with this set of ingredients as not every day sees 35,000 eggs with a combined weight of 2,070 kg cracked open to make one dish.
On top of that 430 kg (947 lb 15.8 oz) of butter, 246 litres of milk, a 10-kg (22 lb 0.7 oz) dash of salt and a 2-kg (4 lb 6.5 oz) sprinkling of pepper made up the rest of the scrambled egg recipe and helped break the previous record by 900 kg (1984 lb 2.5 oz), making it one-third larger than the previous record.
More than 20 chefs were involved in making the scrambled eggs led by Mooroogun Coopen, president of the Mauritian Chefs Association.
“Cooking scrambled eggs of this size is very challenging,” he said. “First, the equipment had to be adequate. We did not only need giant equipment, but also quality ones. Inox 316 (a type of stainless steel) was used for the pan, the giant whisk and the rack.
“The cooking itself required a skillful application of the culinary techniques which we’ve acquired over time.”
You maybe wondering what one then does with nearly 2,500 kg of piping hot breakfast food.
As per Guinness World Records guidelines, the whole lot was distributed for consumption, with more than 8,000 portions sent out to underprivileged communities Caritas, an international aid organisation.
Patricia Felicite, General Secretary of Caritas île Maurice, added: “Caritas is glad to be collaborating with Inicia on this project, as over and above the fact of being a Guinness World Records title holder, we are helping to feed some 8,000 persons in our network today.”
